This monograph, as the author states in his preface, is not a survey of experimental and theoretical
work on polyelectrolyteut an attempt to treat simple models for polyelectrolytes without com-
plicated and detailed mathematics, concentrating on the meaning of the theoretical results. In this
the author seems to have largely succeeded. Emphasis is on equilibrium properties, although
dielectric dispersion is treated.
In view of the importance of polyelectrolytesin biological systems an increasing research effort
is probably to be expected, but this is not the book to attract new researchers to the field ; a good
unified text is still required. This book will, however, be useful to experimentalists in the field
seeking to improve their understanding of theoretical aspects. Production standards are high and, like most books from this House, so is the price.
In fact as it turns out in hindsight. It is a book that redefined polyelectrolyte research in a highly original way. A real classic in the field well worth the effort to master it.
