 -- Division:Earth Sciences Department:Geophysics

-- -- -- -- Bringing Science Solutions to the WorldThe Earth Sciences Division seeks a Civil/Structural Engineering Postdoc to focus on assessing the applicability of the technical basis for a regulatory guide on Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) yses for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) . A technology-neutral and robust technical basis is needed for the new SSI guidance. As a Postdoc, you will: Play a major role in the development of a technical report for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission that provides a technology-neutral and robust technical basis for a new SSI guidance. This includes collecting relevant information, assessing it, formulating a coherent understanding of it, and assisting in writing a report about it. It also includes working on developing methods to perform any yses that might be necessary to support the conclusions to be contained in the required report. You will also assist in project tasks on three related NRC-supported projects at LBNL, specifically a project on developing the technical basis for enhanced-accuracy understanding of base isolation systems, a project on developing ysis methods to incorporate multi-dimensional loading and incoherent ground motion in soil-structure-interaction yses, and a project to develop enhanced understanding of whether the NRC's current regulatory approaches apply to all modular reactors in the seiic-structural-civil engineering area. These three projects, along with the principal project discussed above, are all being carried out together in a coherent LBNL program of civil-structural-seiic-geotechnical engineering and risk and safety assesent.Qualifications A recent Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline with a strong background in the above. Demonstrated experience in understanding one or more of the following areas: seiic engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, risk and safety assesent, and related topics, preferably as they relate to nuclear power plants.
