The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is among the world’s leaders in the research and development of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) – a technology using functional ceramics for clean and efficient production of electricity and heat. In addition we have world-class activities on a number of related topics, including high-temperature electrolysis, oxygen and hydrogen separation membranes, electrochemical flue gas purification and magnetic refrigeration. Key division competencies include ceramic processing, solid state electrochemistry and advanced characterization.
To strengthen our activities in the Microstructures and Interfaces Program we are seeking an outstanding postdoc to develop and perform advanced microscopy ysis of a variety of new energy materials. Electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM) in combination with structural, crystallographic and electrochemical investigations are crucial techniques for understanding and modeling the behavior of new multiphase ceramic and metallic materials.
Risø DTU has several SEMs and TEMs including a FEG-SEM, a dual-beam FEG FIB-SEM and a FEG-TEM with GIF and STEM unit, all equipped with EDS spectrometers. For the FIB-SEM Risø DTU has developed unique 3D microstructure reconstruction techniques for functional ceramics. Another unique microscopy technique is the controlled atmosphere high temperature scanning probe microscope (CAHT-SPM), also developed at Risø DTU for in-situ structural and electrochemical investigations of the surfaces of the functional ceramics. The EM and SPM labs are supported by a variety of sample preparation facilities run by laboratory technicians. Furthermore, we have access to the Centre for Electron Nanoscopy at the DTU Lyngby campus holding both state-of-the-art sample preparation facilities and seven new SEMs and TEMs, including two world-class Cs-corrected and monochromated Titans.
Job description

  • Micro- and nano-scale structural and chemical ysis of materials for new energy technologies, e.g. ceramics for SOFCs. The focus within ysis will be either by 3D FIB-SEM reconstruction or in-situ CAHT-SPM
  • Further development and promotion of 3D FIB reconstruction or in-situ CAHT-SPM within functional ceramics
  • Advanced sample preparation for SEM or CAHT-SPM ysis including FIB techniques in collaboration with laboratory technicians
  • Strong interaction with colleagues responsible for ceramic processing and electrochemical testing of components
  • Responsibility for maintaining our advanced microscopy techniques up-to-date and adding new scientific value to the division by developing or acquiring new relevant microscopy techniques and ysis methods
  • Supervision of students and training of new users
Qualifications
  • PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or similar
  • Significant experience within advanced microscopy, either 3D FIB reconstruction or in-situ SPM documented by high-quality publications and/or patents
  • Experience with several ytical FEG-SEM techniques and outstanding image ysis expertise, or ytical SPM (e.g. Kelvin probing)
  • Extensive experience with detailed structural and chemical ysis of complex multi-material systems, multi-layers or heterostructures
  • Experience with supervising students and training users
  • Experience with sample preparation by specialized techniques
  • Ability to work independently, plan, carry out and document complicated tasks and to be a part of a large, dynamic research environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English, both written and spoken
