About half of the primary school students surveyed in Guangzhou have their own micro-blogs and over one-third of them shop online, according to a survey released on May 30.
A survey carried out by the Guangdong Provincial Social Sciences Academy and several government agencies shows that nearly half of the 5,000 students surveyed have micro-blogs on Sina.com or QQ.com, the two most popular micro-blog platforms in China.
About 32 percent of them shop online. Every day more than 84 percent log on to QQ, China's most popular instant messaging service, 80 percent watch online videos and 71 percent play online games, according to the survey.
The survey also shows that more than half of the students surveyed have cell phones and 44 percent have an iPad. About 33 percent use cell phones to surf online.
“This generation of students has grown up with new media, including the Internet, computers and cell phones. New media has become part of their lives and affects their modes of studying, living, communicating and thinking,” said Zhang Haibo, Guangzhou Municipal Young Pioneers General Counselor, a student association.
The survey sent more than 5,000 questionnaires to 50 primary schools in 12 districts of Guangzhou. China had 513 million Internet users by the end of 2011, showing that 38.3 percent of the Chinese people used the Internet, according to a report released by the China Internet Networks Information Center.
