MRC Functional Genomics Unit, University of Oxford

MRC Career Development Fellowship

Subcellular Organelles in Drosophila

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist to join Dr Ji-Long Liu’s research group in the internationally renowned MRC Functional Genomics Unit within the University of Oxford.

The post holder will join a highly interactive research team working on subcellular organelles in Drosophila. The long-term goal is to understand the composition and regulation of subcellular organelles using Drosophila the fruitfly as a model system. We will particularly focus on newly discovered cytoplaic organelles such as the U body, which contains all nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and their assembly machinery the survival motor neuron (N) complex (Liu JL and Gall JG. PNAS. 2007 July 10; 104(28):11655). N is the determining factor for spinal muscular atrophy (A), the top genetic cause of childhood mortality. You will develop biochemical approaches to purify U bodies and determine the proteomics and RNAomics of the U body. Similar strategy will be applied to study other organelles recently discovered in our group. Study of subcellular organelles by biochemical approaches promises to form a broad view on basic cellular questions, as well as shed light on molecular mechani of disease related to subcellular organelles.

The successful applicant should have a strong background in biochemistry and cell biology. Experience of Drosophila genetics would be an advantage, although training will be given. Excellent organisational and communication skills will be required, together with the ability to work well within a team.

You will work in the MRC Unit within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford. Oxford has an active Drosophila community and the Oxford Fly Club meet monthly to discuss their newest findings on fruitflies. The Functional Genomics Unit is a world-renowned centre for comparative genomics and research into neurological disorders using model organis. Additional information about the Unit can be found at www.mrcfgu.ox.ac.uk, whilst informal enquiries can be made to Dr Ji-Long Liu at jilong.liu@dpag.ox.ac.uk. For further information about the MRC please visit www.mrc.ac.uk.

This post is available from October 2010. This is a 3 year training and development position for a post-doctoral scientist. It provides opportunities to develop research project skills and develop collaborative links with colleagues within the University of Oxford and elsewhere. Starting salary will be in the range £26,022 to £28,178 pa. You will be entitled to benefits including 30 days annual leave, an excellent pension scheme and access to MRC training.

Applications for this role must be made online at http://jobs.mrc.ac.uk. If you do not have internet access or experience technical difficulties, please call 01793 301156, quoting reference number FGU10/200.
