We are seeking outstanding applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship to study ribosome synthesis in budding yeast and mammals, with a strong emphasis on connections between ribogenesis and human diseases. Successful candidate will join the Lafontaine group at the University of Brussels (www.ulb.ac.be) on the BioPark campus (http://www.ulb.ac.be/biopark/index.html ). Funding is available now, for up to 4 years. Applicants must have a strong background (Ph.D., publication record) in molecular cell biology. We also expect exceptional interpersonal skills to enable close communication within the experimental group involved in the project. Numerous human diseases have been linked to defects in ribosome synthesis. These are the so-called ‘ribosomopathies’, including several aplasias (red blood cell maturation defects), bone-marrow failure, and other disorders. The major site of ribosome synthesis, the nucleolus, has known functions in cell-cycle regulation and tumour surveillance pathways, and several nucleolar antigens have been notoriously linked to blood cancers. Here the aim is to understand how human ribosomes assemble and function in health and disease. We want to find out what the nucleolus has to “tell” tumour pathologists and to define communalities and specificities between human ribogenesis and that of budding yeast. Additional information is available at www.LafontaineLab.com and www.cmmi.be. The BioPark campus offers an attractive international research and study environment with approximately 550 scientists active in key areas of molecular life sciences and medicine. It is located ~50 km south of Brussels, next to an International Airport.
